REGIONAL EMPLOYER SPONSORSHIP

DAMA sponsorship, with a clearer plan

An occupation list is only the starting point. TILSAVV helps workers and employers examine the region, role, agreement and individual visa requirements together.

What is a DAMA visa pathway?

People often search for a “DAMA visa”, but a Designated Area Migration Agreement is an employer sponsorship framework, rather than a standalone visa. The regional agreement sets the available occupations and concessions; an individual employer needs its own approved labour agreement.

Depending on the agreement, sponsorship can use the subclass 482 Skills in Demand, subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional or subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme programs. See the Home Affairs DAMA explanation.

For a worker, the practical question is whether a genuine role, an eligible employer and a suitable agreement fit together. A job title appearing on a list does not establish that the worker can obtain a visa.

Who should consider a DAMA assessment?

This pathway can be worth exploring when a regional business has an ongoing recruitment need, or a worker needs to understand whether standard sponsorship settings fit their circumstances.

01

Regional employers

You have a genuine vacancy and want to compare the standard sponsorship program with the agreement-based options available for the actual work location.

02

Experienced workers

You have relevant qualifications and employment evidence, and a prospective employer willing to discuss sponsorship.

03

Applicants considering concessions

You want an individual review of occupation-specific age, English or other concessions, including the implications for a later permanent pathway.

Start with your actual duties and the worksite address. These details are more useful than choosing a visa solely because someone in a similar occupation used it.

Age concessions and permanent residence: check both stages

Some DAMAs vary standard age, English, skills or salary settings. Concessions differ by agreement, occupation and visa stage. They are not automatically available to every worker in the region.

For example, the Northern Territory Government publishes age limits of under 55 for skill level 1–4 occupations and under 50 for skill level 5 occupations under its DAMA settings. This is an NT example, not a national age rule.

A temporary visa should be assessed alongside the proposed permanent stage. Your age at the relevant future application point, employment history and the employer’s agreement may all matter. Read our guide to DAMA options after 45 for a practical planning framework.

How TILSAVV can assist

Our work starts by identifying what needs to be established before an application strategy is chosen. The scope of assistance and professional fees are agreed with you before engagement.

01

Pathway and occupation review

Compare the proposed duties, location and worker profile with the relevant agreement and visa stream. Identify evidence gaps and questions needing clarification.

02

Employer preparation

Assist with the applicable endorsement and labour agreement process, recruitment evidence, position documentation and nomination preparation within the agreed scope.

03

Worker application support

Organise qualifications, skills assessment requirements, experience and English evidence; prepare the visa application and assist with departmental requests within the engagement.

We can also discuss alternative employer-sponsored pathways where a DAMA is not the appropriate starting point. An assessment can save time by identifying a mismatch before substantial application work begins.

The DAMA sponsorship process: five connected checks

  1. Identify the region and occupation. Confirm the actual business location, duties and current agreement coverage.
  2. Review employer and worker requirements. Consider recruitment efforts, business evidence, employment terms and the worker’s documented skills.
  3. Seek regional endorsement. The employer applies to the relevant Designated Area Representative under its requirements.
  4. Request the employer’s labour agreement. Endorsement enables this next request; it is not itself a visa approval.
  5. Prepare nomination and visa stages. Follow the applicable sequence, agreement conditions and visa requirements; assess any permanent pathway separately.

Each stage has its own decision-maker and evidence requirements. A complete strategy links the stages together rather than treating endorsement as the end of the process.

Victoria, Geelong and the regional boundary question

TILSAVV is based in North Geelong and assists clients across Australia. Our office location does not determine where an employer can access DAMA sponsorship.

The Great South Coast DAMA region lists Glenelg, Southern Grampians, Moyne, Corangamite, Colac Otway and Warrnambool local government areas. Geelong is not included in that published coverage. A location qualifying as regional for another visa purpose should not be assumed to fall within this DAMA.

We check the relevant worksite and agreement rather than using “regional Victoria” as a blanket eligibility description.

Check the employer’s industry too

The Great South Coast update states that, from 26 March 2026, where an occupation is available under an Industry Labour Agreement, DAMA endorsement is only available for that occupation if the worker will be employed in a different industry. Employers in the covered industry must use the relevant Industry Labour Agreement.

DAMA sponsorship FAQs

Can I apply for DAMA without an employer?

Individuals cannot access DAMA independently. You need sponsorship from an employer operating in the designated region for an occupation covered by the agreement. Home Affairs explains the sponsorship requirement. TILSAVV provides migration assistance; an enquiry is not a job placement or sponsorship offer.

Does a standard business sponsorship approval cover DAMA?

A standard business sponsorship approval and an employer’s DAMA labour agreement are different arrangements. We check the business’s actual approvals and the agreement-based requirements for the proposed role.

Does DAMA guarantee permanent residence?

No. The visa stream, agreement terms and individual circumstances determine the available pathway. The NT permanent residence guidance illustrates that employment, age, occupation and other criteria apply at the permanent stage.

How much will the process cost?

Costs depend on the agreement, visa pathway, family composition, evidence and professional work required. Ask for a breakdown of government charges, regional endorsement charges where applicable, assessment costs and professional fees, including who is responsible for each item.

How long does DAMA sponsorship take?

There are separate endorsement, labour agreement, nomination and visa stages. Timing depends on those decisions and the evidence required. We discuss the sequence for your matter rather than promising a fixed approval date.
